Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has commenced a two-day visit to the Northern Division of Fiji to assess proposed road improvements under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.
This project is being funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of the People’s Republic of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade is set to play a central role in enhancing infrastructure in Fiji.
During his visit, Rabuka underscored the necessity of integrating local perspectives into the project planning. He emphasized that the road upgrades should not only focus on improving transportation connectivity but also aim to create job opportunities for local communities throughout the construction process.
The Prime Minister inspected several critical segments of the road project, including a 15-kilometer stretch of Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and a 35-kilometer section from Nabalebale to Dogoru on the Wailevu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North Delana Rabalaka accompanied the delegation and provided valuable insights regarding the technical and logistical details of the initiative.
Additionally, the group participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau. This meeting focused on the economic prospects of the region, which are anticipated to receive a significant boost from the improved road infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee voiced his approval of the project, highlighting its potential to enhance infrastructure and foster regional economic growth. He noted that the upgraded roads are likely to benefit essential sectors, including tourism and renewable energy initiatives such as hydropower, while also improving access and connectivity for rural communities.
This project promises to bring positive change to local communities by enhancing infrastructure, creating jobs, and boosting regional development, illustrating the potential benefits of international collaboration focused on sustainable development.
In summary, Prime Minister Rabuka’s visit to evaluate the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project showcases the commitment to not only enhance Fiji’s infrastructure but also to ensure that local communities reap the benefits of such significant developments.
