Fiji’s Road Safety Crisis: Are We Ignoring the Danger?

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces are currently focusing on reconciliation efforts, bringing together familiar figures from the past to initiate discussions aimed at healing and finding a way forward for both the military and the nation. Although participants face the emotional challenge of revisiting their experiences of pain and loss, there seems to be a collective spirit of forgiveness and acknowledgment, which underlines the potential for positive dialogue about the impact on survivors.

However, amidst these significant discussions, there is an urgent reminder regarding road safety, particularly as communities prepare to return home following the Diwali celebrations. Recently, a tragic accident in Nasinu resulted in the death of a man in his 30s when his vehicle collided with another driven by a man of the same age, prompting police to stress the necessity for vigilance amongst all drivers.

The increase in road accidents during the festive season underscores the importance of adhering to safety measures. Sadly, just days before the Nasinu incident, another life was claimed when Salesh Prasad lost control of his vehicle while returning home to celebrate Diwali, tragically resulting in his death at the scene.

Currently, Fiji’s road death toll stands at 46, a slight reduction compared to 68 fatalities during the same period last year. This situation highlights the pressing need for all road users to adopt safer driving habits. Following traffic laws, being mindful of distractions like mobile phones, abstaining from driving under the influence, and taking breaks when necessary can contribute to safer journeys.

In conclusion, as many Fiji residents travel back home, let’s prioritize safety on the roads and make responsible choices while navigating them. Every effort to stay alert and cautious can help avoid accidents, showing that collective action and awareness can lead to a safer environment for all.
