Fiji’s Road Safety Crisis: Are Drivers Ignoring the Warning Signs?

Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported in Fiji this year, raising significant concerns about safety as the school year approaches. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, who serves as the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, highlighted that the majority of these incidents—11 out of 13—were attributed to drivers losing control of their vehicles, often due to the dual issues of speeding and fatigue.

In his statement, SSP Divuana urged the public to prioritize road safety, especially with an increase in traffic expected soon. “If drivers can plan their trips well, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing, they can significantly enhance their safety as well as the safety of others,” he emphasized.

A notably positive development in the current year is the absence of fatalities due to road accidents thus far, contrasting sharply with two deaths recorded during the same timeframe last year. This decline may reflect the effectiveness of ongoing road safety campaigns and public awareness efforts aimed at reducing reckless driving behavior, particularly as community events increase traffic.

The Fiji Police Force remains vigilant, conducting regular traffic checks and encouraging drivers to take advantage of Community Posts along the highway for rest breaks. SSP Divuana reiterated, “Safety must be your top concern,” urging drivers to be responsible and attentive on the roads.

In summary, while the number of serious accidents remains a cause for concern, the lack of fatalities this year offers a hopeful sign for improved road safety in Fiji. The collaboration between police efforts and community responsibility plays a crucial role in fostering a safer driving environment for all. With continued vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines, Fiji can work towards a future of even safer roads.
