The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is ramping up its efforts to promote road safety by taking strong measures against reckless drivers. As of early December 2024, the Authority has cancelled 62 driver licenses and suspended 21 others due to traffic violations.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that the Authority has held 107 counselling sessions across its various branches for individuals exhibiting irresponsible driving behavior. In these sessions, a total of 1,366 first warnings, along with 297 second and 155 final warnings, were issued. Rokosawa emphasized that these sessions play a vital role in educating drivers about their responsibilities and discouraging unsafe driving habits.
In addition to these proactive measures, the LTA has also put 39 client IDs on hold for severe violations, with one case being referred for further audit. Rokosawa stated, “These measures highlight LTA’s zero-tolerance approach to misconduct. We are committed to ensuring our roads are safe for everyone.”
He also reaffirmed that the Authority will take stringent actions against offenders, expressing, “We will not hesitate to cancel more licenses if drivers continue to ignore the law and jeopardize lives.” The LTA’s approach extends beyond punitive actions; it aims to save lives and reduce the number of traffic incidents through accountability.
Rokosawa concluded by stressing the importance of acknowledging the responsibility that comes with driving, stating, “Every license we cancel or suspend is one less potential threat on the road.” This commitment to safety not only protects individual drivers but also safeguards all road users.
Overall, the LTA’s efforts illustrate a proactive and educational approach to enhancing road safety in Fiji, aiming to cultivate a culture of responsible driving among all motorists. By taking these steps, the LTA seeks a future where driving is safer for everyone.
