Thirteen serious road accidents have been recorded in Fiji this year, sparking significant concerns about road safety, particularly as the new school year is about to commence. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, has underscored the critical need for heightened awareness and precautions on the roads during this busy period.
According to SSP Divuana, a worrying majority of these accidents—11 out of 13—were tied to drivers losing control of their vehicles, mainly due to speeding and driver fatigue. To address these issues, he urged drivers to plan their journeys carefully, take necessary breaks during long trips, and avoid the stress of rushing, emphasizing, “Safety must be your top concern.”
In a positive light, it is worth noting that there have been no fatalities reported from these accidents thus far this year, a significant improvement compared to two fatalities during the same timeframe last year. This decrease may indicate that ongoing road safety campaigns and community awareness initiatives are beginning to produce positive results.
The Fiji Police Force is actively engaged in promoting road safety by conducting regular traffic checks and raising awareness among drivers. They encourage the public to utilize Community Posts along highways for much-needed rest stops. As the school season approaches, the importance of vigilant and responsible driving becomes even more paramount.
In summary, while the rising number of serious accidents is troubling, the absence of fatalities offers a hopeful perspective on the future of road safety in Fiji. By fostering cooperation between law enforcement and the community, there is potential for continued improvements, ensuring that every journey on Fiji’s roads is safer for everyone involved.
