Fiji’s Rising Suicide Rates: A Call for Community Action

The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 suicide cases for the year 2024, a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicides reported, down from 47 in the previous year. These statistics cover the timeframe from January 1 to August 22.

Among the cases, there were eight suicides and five attempted suicides involving individuals under the age of 18. The highest rate of suicides was observed among those aged over 60, with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides recorded. Males accounted for the majority of the reported cases, with 50 suicides noted.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed concern over the alarming statistics, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding in light of the social issues facing society today. He urged community leaders to help shift the narrative.

“We need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk. As we deal with modern challenges of policing, another challenge is the issue of cyberbullying and we call on Fijians to be more caring also in the virtual world,” ACP Raikaci stated.

The reasons cited for the rise in suicide and attempted suicide cases include domestic disputes, family conflicts, relationship issues, stress, and illness. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
