The Fiji Police Force has reported 63 suicide cases so far in 2024, a slight decrease from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicide cases, down from 47 in the previous year, with data reflecting incidents from January 1 to August 22.
Among those affected, there were eight suicide cases and five attempted suicides involving individuals under 18 years old. The group over 60 years old reported the highest incidence, with 19 suicides and two attempts. Males accounted for the majority of cases, with a total of 50 recorded incidents.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed concern over the alarming statistics, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding in light of growing social issues. He urged community leaders to assist in shifting the conversation surrounding mental health.
“We need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk. As we tackle modern policing challenges, we also face the issue of cyberbullying and encourage Fijians to be more compassionate, even in digital interactions,” Raikaci stated.
Key factors contributing to suicides and attempted suicides include disputes with spouses or family members, relationship issues, stress, and illness. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
