Fiji Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has expressed high regard for players Isaiah Armstrong and Inia Tabuavou following their recent match against Tonga. As the team prepares for a challenging semi-final against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup, Byrne highlighted Armstrong’s performance at fullback and Tabuavou’s determination as a young athlete.
Byrne praised Armstrong’s contributions to maintaining territory during the game, saying, “I liked his ability to give us another strength in our territory battle. With both Tonga and Samoa being big physical teams, playing them effectively on the field is crucial.” He noted Armstrong’s versatility, particularly his successful chase of a high kick and his strong positioning at fullback.
Armstrong’s skills on both offense and defense stood out to the coach, as he played an essential role as a first receiver during open play. “He also serves as another link player in attack, filling in as a first receiver. It adds another dimension to our game, enhancing our kicking territory and allowing a first receiver to fit into our strategy.”
Regarding Inia Tabuavou, Byrne recognized the young player’s determination and strength, especially in the initial phases of the first half. He acknowledged that Tabuavou is progressing significantly in his debut season with the Flying Fijians. “He is enjoying his first stint with the team and is relaxed in the environment, surrounded by his teammates for the next season,” Byrne explained.
He commended Tabuavou’s attitude and work ethic, emphasizing that he has been training diligently and adapting to the rigorous standards of international rugby. “He’s doing very well and shows improvement every week.”
