For many teenagers, high school is defined by friendships, education, and aspirations. However, for 16-year-old Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, a Year 10 student at Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi, his ambitions are paired with a well-defined ambition and resolute commitment.
Recently recognized as one of 29 players chosen for the Fijian Drua Academy, Rafaele is determined to wear the prestigious Swire Shipping Fijian Drua jersey in the next five years. Coming from Batiri village in Macuata with family ties in Korovuto, Nadi, he embodies the idea that hard work, discipline, and a solid support network can help anyone achieve their biggest dreams.
“I thank the Drua management for believing in me and giving me a spot in this academy,” Rafaele expressed. “My goal is to work hard and wear the Drua jersey in five years’ time.”
Rafaele’s love for rugby is deeply rooted, influenced by family traditions. As the third child in his family, he understands the importance of hard work and determination, largely thanks to mentorship from his cousin, Mesake Vocevoce, who currently plays as a lock for the Fijian Drua.
“Mesake always inspires me,” he shared. “I know that to succeed, I need to stay disciplined, follow my coaches’ advice, and give it my all.”
Being selected for the academy symbolizes more than just talent; it showcases the unwavering support from his community, friends, and family. This milestone is a dream he has harbored since childhood, and with firm dedication and the guidance of the Fijian Drua Academy, that dream is closer to realization than ever.
