Keleto Takele, a boxer representing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), clinched a gold medal by defeating his teammate Rusiate Qalo in the 57-60kg division at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at LICI Court in Suva. The event was notably competitive, with the Fiji Police Force emerging victorious overall in the boxing competition.

Expressing gratitude for his achievement, Takele said, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He acknowledged the challenges faced during their month-long training camp, highlighting the positive mindset that helped him overcome various obstacles.

“Early morning runs and intense training routines took a toll on us, especially among the lighter weight class boxers,” he noted. Takele dedicated his victory to his father, family, and army comrades who showed their support during the competition.

In sharing his journey, Takele mentioned, “This is my first year boxing, and this was my seventh match since joining the Army Boxing Club,” crediting his brother, a fellow boxer, for encouraging him to pursue the sport. He emphasized the values of discipline, focus, humility, and determination that boxing instills, countering the common misconception that boxers lack humility.

Takele also encouraged young people to take up boxing not just as a sport but as a means of self-defense and fitness.
