Keleto Takele, representing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), emerged victorious by clinching the gold medal in the 57–60kg division at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing finals held at LICI Court in Suva. Takele secured his win by outscoring his RFMF teammate Rusiate Qalo.
Despite the personal success, it was the Fiji Police Force that ultimately triumphed in the overall boxing competition. Takele expressed his gratitude for the win, acknowledging the challenges faced during training. “We didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition,” he noted, reflecting on the rigorous month-long training camp that tested their resolve.
He dedicated his victory to his father and family members who supported him, as well as the army officers at camp. “Spiritual preparation motivated me to be resilient,” Takele added, emphasizing the importance of mental strength alongside physical training as he participated in his seventh boxing match since joining the Army Boxing Club.
Growing up in Navunikabi, Namosi, Takele was encouraged to pursue boxing by his brother, who is also a trainer and boxer. He addressed some common perceptions about boxing, stating that the sport is rooted in discipline, focus, humility, and determination, rather than arrogance. Furthermore, he encouraged young people to engage in boxing for self-defense and fitness.
This positive outlook on boxing as a means to develop character and resilience not only highlights the sport’s benefits but also serves as an inspiring message for youth to harness their potential through disciplined efforts.
In summary, Takele’s victory stands not only as a personal achievement but as a testament to the dedication and hard work of athletes in the face of adversity, encouraging others to find strength and purpose through sports.
