Keleto Takele, a boxer from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), achieved a remarkable victory by securing the gold medal in the 57–60kg division at the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing final held at the LICI Court in Suva. Takele triumphed over his fellow RFMF boxer, Rusiate Qalo, winning by points.
Despite this win, the overall boxing competition was claimed by the Fiji Police Force. Takele expressed his gratitude, stating, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He acknowledged the hurdles faced during their month-long training camp, including inadequate nutrition and the challenges of early morning runs paired with rigorous training.
Describing the Ratu Sukuna Bowl as a prestigious event that fosters camaraderie between the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force, he dedicated his victory to his father and family members who supported him, as well as to his comrades at camp. Takele highlighted the importance of spiritual preparation, which provided him with resilience throughout difficult training sessions. Having only recently taken up boxing in this competitive format, Takele noted that this was his seventh match since joining the Army Boxing Club.
Living in the village of Navunikabi, Namosi, Takele attributes his passion for boxing in part to his brother, who is also a boxer and trainer. Addressing common misconceptions, he emphasized that boxing is rooted in discipline, focus, humility, and determination. Furthermore, he encouraged young people to consider boxing not only as a means of self-defence but also as a way to maintain physical fitness.
This story highlights the perseverance and dedication of young athletes like Takele, inspiring others to pursue their passions while fostering a sense of community and resilience through sports.
In summary, Keleto Takele’s victory reflects not only personal achievement but also the values of discipline and determination in sports, encouraging the youth to engage in activities that promote health and self-defense.
