Fiji’s Renewable Energy Revolution: A 100MW Boost on the Horizon

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) is set to add 100MW of power to its grid through a new collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is currently developing a series of renewable energy projects. The agreement was signed yesterday, marking a significant development for EFL as it aims to fulfill over 90 percent of Fiji’s electricity demand through renewable sources by 2035.

Among the projects being considered is the implementation of floating solar technology, which ADB has highlighted as an appealing option. Siddhartha Shah, director of the Office of Markets Development and Public-Private Partnership, indicated that ADB will assist EFL in creating a renewable energy program totaling 100MW. He mentioned that the scope of the project will encompass various renewable energy solutions including floating solar, batteries, and other technologies like wind and biomass.

EFL chair Rokoseru Nabalarua underscored the rapidly increasing demand for electricity, which has surged by 10 percent this year, significantly exceeding the usual annual growth rate of 4 percent. This rise, he noted, is indicative of economic expansion, reinforcing the urgency for EFL to invest in renewable energy to ensure a stable supply.

Although details of the project portfolio have not been disclosed, it is anticipated that the first projects could be delivered within 12 to 18 months. Shah expressed optimism about beginning the procurement process for these initiatives next year. Depending on the technology selected, he suggested that some projects could come online within the next two to three years, potentially even sooner.

Once operational, EFL’s renewable energy portfolio will surpass the output of the existing Monasavu facility, which currently provides 80MW.
