The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Joel Abraham, who has served in this role since 2016 and joined the commission in 2013.
Abraham has been recognized as a transformative leader, dedicated to enhancing the regulatory environment in Fiji and the Asia-Pacific region by focusing on fairness, consumer protection, and economic integrity. His tenure has been characterized by a vigorous commitment to safeguarding consumers from unethical business practices through the enforcement of effective competition and consumer protection regulations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, praised Abraham for his contributions, indicating that consumers are in a better position today thanks to his leadership.
In expressing his thoughts on his departure, Abraham reflected on his time with the FCCC, stating, “It has been an incredible 13 years with FCCC, and I am filled with a mix of emotions. FCCC is more than an organization to me; it has been a family, a purpose, and a home. I am confident that I leave FCCC in capable hands, and I am excited about the future that awaits all of you and the Commission.” He emphasized the importance of investing in staff, expressing his confidence that these investments will continue to enhance consumer protections for Fijians.
Abraham’s commitment to serving the public and advocating for consumer rights has been evident throughout his career, and he acknowledged the vital contributions of the FCCC team in establishing the organization’s reputation and success.
Looking ahead, he will take on a regional role to spread the principles of regulatory excellence across the Asia-Pacific. He reassured, “This is not a goodbye, but a moment of transition, as I look forward to collaborating with FCCC in new ways that align with our shared mission.”
This leadership change presents an opportunity for the FCCC to continue evolving and adapting under new guidance, potentially fostering further improvements in consumer protection in Fiji and the wider region.
In summary, Joel Abraham’s resignation marks a significant transition for the FCCC, but his legacy of commitment to consumer rights and regulatory integrity is likely to inspire future advancements, ensuring the ongoing well-being of Fijian consumers.
