Fiji’s Punjas Group of Companies, one of the country’s largest privately-owned businesses, has inaugurated a new $55 million distribution center in the Western Division as it approaches its 90th anniversary next year. This ambitious development, currently under construction in Lautoka, is anticipated to be the largest warehouse in the Pacific, boasting a remarkable storage capacity of 24,000 pallets.
The initiative is part of Punjas’ strategy to enhance its supply chain capabilities in Fiji and across the Pacific region, aimed at satisfying the increasing demand for both food and non-food products. During a recent visit to the facility, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Prof. Biman Prasad, along with his team, were briefed by Punjas management on the company’s significant role in both the local economy and its expanding international footprint with a range of Fijian-made products.
Highlighting the investment’s importance, Mr. Prasad noted that it marks a crucial milestone not just for Punjas, but for the entire Pacific region as well. He emphasized that this development aims to boost the efficiency of regional supply chains and create new economic opportunities, reinforcing Fiji’s position in the growing Pacific market.
Established in 1935 and currently employing over 1,500 individuals, Punjas is also celebrating not only its rich history but its commitment to innovation within its manufacturing operations, including biscuits. The Deputy Prime Minister toured the company’s headquarters, where he engaged with senior directors Kanti and Jagjiwan Punja about future plans for economic growth.
In addition to the distribution center, Punjas recently made significant strides in community development by announcing a $2.25 million investment in the expansion of the Punjas Medical Centre, through its Punjas Charity Trust, aimed at improving medical accessibility. The company also extended the Punjas Children’s Park in Lautoka as part of its ongoing commitment to enhance the quality of life for the people of Fiji.
This series of developments underlines Punjas’ proactive approach to both economic growth and community betterment, setting a precedent for other enterprises in the region to follow. As the company prepares for its milestone anniversary, its ongoing investments and innovations reflect a robust future trajectory that aims to benefit both its employees and the wider community.
In summary, Punjas’ new distribution center and related community investments emphasize its role as a key player in Fiji’s economy, providing hope for growth and improved quality of life for many Fijians.
