Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the Government of Fiji has issued evacuation advisories for citizens in areas impacted by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. In a statement to FijiLive, Rabuka emphasized the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens and peacekeepers, who play a crucial role in promoting peace in regions affected by conflict worldwide.
The Prime Minister noted that Fijians were aware of the risks associated with the conflict before it intensified. He reiterated Fiji’s stance on the tensions in the Middle East, describing the situation between Israel and Iran as a bilateral issue while affirming the country’s dedication to supporting peace through its participation in United Nations peacekeeping efforts.
Rabuka highlighted the importance of respecting territorial integrity, a principle recognized by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, stating, “Countries withdrew to their internationally recognized boundaries and borders. However, since that time, there have been violations, and nations have the right to defend their citizens and territory.”
He also mentioned that Fiji has been involved in peacekeeping missions since 1978 and will continue its efforts until the UN decides to withdraw from regions affected by conflict. Fijian military personnel currently on duty will remain in these areas as the government stays committed to maintaining peace in the Middle East.
In a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to recent missile strikes by asserting that Iran would face consequences for its actions. The Israeli government is considering various retaliatory options, potentially targeting Iranian oil refineries, military installations, or nuclear sites. U.S. President Joe Biden has voiced support for Israel’s right to retaliate while stressing that any response should be proportionate.
