As Fiji gears up to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged all Fijians to unite in the fight against this critical issue, emphasizing that it is a shared responsibility among all citizens.
In his national address, Rabuka pointed out that gender-based violence (GBV) is a widespread concern that affects every community across Fiji. He stressed that the efforts to combat GBV must extend beyond the designated 16-day campaign, advocating for continuous action throughout the year.
“Gender-based violence is an issue that demands our collective action—not just during these 16 days, but every day of the year, every year,” Rabuka said.
The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of preventing violence against women and girls, categorizing it as not only a social concern but also a national priority. He elaborated on how GBV destabilizes families, undermines community cohesion, and obstructs the nation’s overall progress.
“Violence robs families of their stability, communities of their strength, and the nation of its potential. Prevention must go hand in hand with justice, where women and girls are safe everywhere, and justice is a reality—not just a promise,” he remarked.
Rakesh Chand, Deputy Director of Community-Oriented Policing, reminded parents to remain vigilant, particularly with the festive season approaching, as domestic violence incidents often increase during this time. He urged families to create safer environments for their loved ones.
This year’s theme for the 16 Days of Activism is “From Prevention to Justice, Ending Violence, Impunity Against Women and Girls in All Spaces.” The campaign aims to bolster efforts to prevent violence, ensure accountability for perpetrators, and create secure spaces for women and girls.
Rabuka’s address serves as a rallying cry for citizens, institutions, and communities to collaborate effectively in the fight against GBV.
“Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility,” the Prime Minister emphasized. “Together, we can create a society where women and girls can live without fear, and justice is not just a promise but a reality.”
The campaign is set to commence tomorrow, with Fijians encouraged to participate in various activities and discussions aimed at fostering significant change.
This initiative presents a hopeful opportunity for Fiji to deepen its commitment to eradicating gender-based violence, uniting community efforts toward creating a safer and more just society for all.
