Fiji’s Presidential Vote: Will Incumbent Secure Another Term?

Parliament is set to appoint the President of the Republic of Fiji today. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has endorsed the current President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, for a second term in office. As outlined in the 2013 Constitution, both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition are permitted to nominate one candidate each to the Speaker. The Speaker will then present both nominations to Parliament for a vote among the members. The candidate who secures the majority of votes from the MPs will be appointed to the position. Ratu Katonivere is eligible to serve a second term.
