The Office of the President serves as a vital symbol of unity and should be approached through comprehensive consultations that honor the diverse aspirations of all Fijians. This statement was made by Sepesa Rasili, the president of the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), in response to the recent nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for Fiji’s presidency.

Rasili acknowledged the decision of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, to withdraw his nomination for the position, expressing respect for his wishes and praising his exemplary service. He highlighted the exceptional diplomacy displayed by Katonivere during the transitional period following the power handover in late 2022.

Rasili noted that while it is within the Prime Minister’s rights to nominate candidates as per the Fijian Constitution, it is imperative that such decisions reflect public expectations. He emphasized that the Prime Minister’s choice should ultimately be in the nation’s best interest, taking into account the voices of the people and the significant responsibilities associated with the presidency.
