Fiji’s Presidential Transition: A Significant Step Backward

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially withdrawn his name from consideration for a second term as President.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed this development, stating that on October 17, 2024, he had written to His Excellency requesting his consent for re-nomination under section 84(2) of the Constitution. However, on October 21, 2024, he received Ratu Wiliame’s formal decision to withdraw from being nominated for another term.

“I want to pay tribute to His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and acknowledge his service to the nation as our President,” Rabuka remarked.

He praised Ratu Wiliame for conducting his duties with integrity and patience, highlighting that his steady hand ensured a seamless transition of government after the December 2022 general election.

Rabuka added that Ratu Wiliame was committed to upholding the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, even in the face of those who sought to challenge his resolve.

During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame has facilitated unprecedented freedoms for Fijians and represented the unity and integrity of the State both domestically and internationally. He opened State House to all citizens and engaged in significant diplomatic missions with poise.

Rabuka announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will take place to express the nation’s gratitude to His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere in accordance with traditional protocol at the conclusion of his term.

Fiji’s next President will be appointed during a Special Sitting of Parliament scheduled for Thursday, October 31, 2024.
