Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has officially stepped back from the nomination process for another term as President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this decision in a statement, revealing he had sought Ratu Wiliame’s consent for re-nomination on October 17, 2024, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution.

On October 21, 2024, Mr. Rabuka received a formal notification from the Tui Macuata that Ratu Wiliame had withdrawn his name from consideration. The Prime Minister praised Ratu Wiliame for his service to the nation, stating, “I want to pay tribute to His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.” He commended Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and patience as Head of State, highlighting his role in ensuring a smooth governmental transition after the December 2022 general elections.

Mr. Rabuka emphasized that Ratu Wiliame’s tenure has been characterized by increased freedoms for the Fijian people and acknowledged his efforts to promote national unity, both domestically and internationally. He also noted that during this time, Ratu Wiliame had opened State House to all Fijians and had engaged in significant diplomatic activities.

A formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional customs at the conclusion of his term. Meanwhile, Mr. Rabuka consulted the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which has endorsed Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Cakau, for nomination to the presidency. “The Turaga na Tui Cakau has formally consented to being nominated for the Presidency,” Mr. Rabuka said.

As Prime Minister, he plans to present Ratu Naiqama’s nomination under section 84(2) of the Constitution during a special parliamentary session scheduled for Thursday, October 31, 2024. Mr. Rabuka urged all Fijians to collaborate with his government to foster national unity, social cohesion, peace, stability, and prosperity.
