The Office of the President represents unity and should be approached with extensive consultations, taking into account the diverse perspectives and aspirations of all Fijians. Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) president Sepesa Rasili expressed these sentiments regarding the recent nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency.

Mr. Rasili acknowledged the decision of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, to withdraw his nomination, stating that they respect his choice and commend his exemplary service during his term. He highlighted that under President Katonivere’s leadership, there was notable diplomacy, especially during the transition of power that occurred in late 2022.

He noted that the president’s legacy is characterized by dedication, stability, and unity, and with his stepping down, he will now be able to concentrate on his responsibilities as the head of the vanua o Caumatalevu.

Mr. Rasili emphasized that while the Prime Minister has the authority to nominate candidates according to the Fijian Constitution, it is imperative for this decision to reflect public expectations. He concluded that the Prime Minister’s choice should be made in the nation’s best interest, carefully considering the voices of the people and the responsibilities associated with the presidency.
