Fiji’s Presidential Race: Will Ratu Katonivere Secure a Second Term?

Parliament is set to appoint the President of the Republic of Fiji today. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for the current President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, advocating for him to be granted another term in office.

Under the provisions of the 2013 Constitution, both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition are entitled to submit one nomination each to the Speaker. The Speaker will then present these nominations to the Members of Parliament for a vote. The individual who secures the majority of votes from the MPs will be appointed to the presidential position.

Ratu Katonivere is eligible to serve a second term in office.
