Fiji’s Presidential Race Takes a Surprising Turn

Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has officially withdrawn his nomination for a second term as President. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this decision in a statement, revealing that he had written to Ratu Wiliame on October 17, 2024, requesting his consent to be nominated again as President and Head of State in accordance with section 84(2) of Fiji’s Constitution.

On October 21, 2024, Mr. Rabuka received formal communication from Ratu Wiliame, confirming his withdrawal from the nomination process. In his tribute, Mr. Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service to the nation, highlighting his integrity and patience during his presidency. He noted that Ratu Wiliame played a crucial role in ensuring a seamless governmental transition following the December 2022 general election and upheld the Constitution amidst various challenges.

Mr. Rabuka commented on Ratu Wiliame’s leadership, mentioning that his presidency was characterized by a new level of freedom for the Fijian people and a representation of national unity. A formal traditional ceremony, known as vakasenuqanuqa, will be held to thank Ratu Wiliame in recognition of his contributions at the conclusion of his term.

In the meantime, Mr. Rabuka consulted with the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which endorsed the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, for the presidency nomination. Mr. Rabuka stated that Ratu Naiqama has formally agreed to the nomination and that he will propose his name during a special sitting of Parliament scheduled for October 31, 2024.

Mr. Rabuka called for unity among all Fijians, urging collective efforts towards social cohesion, peace, stability, and prosperity.
