Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be appointed as the government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when Parliament meets at the end of this month. This decision follows the formal withdrawal of Ratu Wiliame Katonivere from the nomination process for a second term as President.
In a statement made early this morning, Mr. Rabuka revealed that on October 17, 2024, he sought Ratu Wiliame’s consent to be nominated for a second term under section 84(2) of the Fijian Constitution. However, on October 21, he received a formal communication from Ratu Wiliame, indicating his withdrawal from the nomination.
Mr. Rabuka also took a moment to honor Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated years of service. He expressed gratitude for Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and composure in performing his duties as Head of State, particularly during the transition of government following the December 2022 general election. He highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and creating a sense of unity within Fiji.
During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was noted for promoting unprecedented freedoms for the citizens of Fiji and for representing the nation’s integrity both domestically and internationally. Mr. Rabuka stated that a traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will be held to express the nation’s appreciation for Ratu Wiliame as his term comes to an end.
