Fiji’s Presidential Nominee: Unraveling the Controversy Behind the Choice

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced Ratu Wiliame Katonivere as Fiji’s nominee for the presidency. In a statement, he revealed that the presidential election is set to occur during a special sitting of Parliament at the end of October.

Rabuka explained that he withdrew his previous nominee due to concerns surrounding certain candidates for the presidency. He mentioned that the Speaker, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, requested clarity on any doubts before proceeding with the nomination. These concerns were related to allegations involving the President, making it essential to resolve any uncertainties.

According to Rabuka, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has confirmed that the files related to the complaints against the President have been closed. The Prime Minister noted that the preliminary investigation requested information from the Financial Intelligence Unit regarding financial details on Ratu Wiliame, and the findings were adequate to refute the allegations.

Furthermore, Rabuka stated that FICAC also validated the assets and liabilities declared in the FIU report. Based on the inquiry results, there is no evidence substantiating the claims made by the complainant. He concluded by indicating that the files have been officially closed.
