The Coalition Government in Fiji is experiencing divisions over its nominations for the next President. Reports indicate that both the Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party are advocating for the continuation of His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s term. Other potential candidates mentioned include Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci and the Vunivalu of Nukunitabua Ratu Naulu Mataitini.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, in an interview, refrained from revealing the government’s nominee but acknowledged that concerns about the nominees were raised by the Speaker earlier today. He also mentioned that he had decided to withdraw his own nomination, stating, “In fairness to both, we could not make the nomination while there was a cloud over our nominees.”
Despite the controversies, the nomination and acknowledgment of the President of Fiji were included in the parliamentary agenda this morning.
Iowane Naivalurua, leader of the bloc of nine, expressed that they are prepared to support the government on matters of common interest, although he noted that the government had not communicated its preferred nominee. He remarked on the political maneuvering, acknowledging that while some names are being circulated, he remains uninformed about the details. The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has not yet addressed inquiries regarding the situation.
