The Coalition Government in Fiji is experiencing divisions regarding its nominees for the position of President of the Republic. Reports indicate that both the Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party are advocating for the reappointment of His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere for a second term.
Additional contenders mentioned include Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci and Ratu Naulu Mataitini, the Vunivalu of Nukunitabua.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, in a conversation with FijiLive, refrained from disclosing the nominee chosen by his party but acknowledged some concerns raised by the Speaker regarding the nominations. He confirmed that he has withdrawn his own nomination, stating, “In fairness to both, we could not make the nomination while there was a cloud over our nominees.”
Despite these developments, the nomination and acknowledgment of the President were still included in the parliamentary agenda this morning.
In related discussions, Iowane Naivalurua, leader of the bloc of nine supporters, expressed their willingness to align with the Government on matters of mutual interest but noted that the Government has not clarified which nominee they expect support for. He remarked, “This is politics at play. I understand that some names are being floated around, but I am unaware of.”
Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu did not provide a response to inquiries regarding the situation.
