The Coalition Government of Fiji is experiencing divisions regarding its candidates for the appointment of the country’s President. Both the Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party have reportedly proposed extending the current president, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for a second term. Other names under consideration include Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci and Ratu Naulu Mataitini, the Vunivalu of Nukunitabua.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated to FijiLive that he could not disclose the nominee but mentioned encountering some discomfort related to the nominations, which was brought to his attention by the Speaker earlier today. He also noted that he has withdrawn his own nomination to ensure fairness amidst concerns surrounding the candidates.
Despite these complications, the nomination and acknowledgment of the President’s appointment was included in the Parliament’s agenda this morning.
Iowane Naivalurua, the Leader of the bloc of nine, indicated that they are willing to support the Government on issues of natural interest, but noted that the Government has yet to clarify whom they wish them to back. He acknowledged the political maneuvering taking place but claimed he was not informed about the specific names being considered.
The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, did not provide a response to inquiries regarding the situation.
