Fiji’s Presidential Appointment: What’s Next?

The Fijian Parliament will hold a special session on October 31 to elect the country’s President. The Business Committee of Parliament confirmed that this meeting will take place at 11 a.m. The current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, is anticipated to be nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Earlier this month, the Parliament was scheduled to nominate and endorse the President, but this did not occur. Prime Minister Rabuka stated that there were concerns regarding his nominee, leading him to withdraw the candidate. President Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, and according to the 2013 Constitution, a President can serve for two terms. He was initially appointed in 2021.
