The Fijian Parliament is set to hold a special session on October 31 to elect the nation’s President. The Business Committee of Parliament announced that this session will commence at 11 am.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is anticipated to nominate the current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. Earlier this month, Parliament was supposed to endorse the President’s appointment, but the process did not take place. Prime Minister Rabuka explained that concerns surrounding his nominee led him to withdraw the initial nomination.
Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, having been appointed in 2021. According to the 2013 Constitution, a President can serve a maximum of two terms.
