The Fijian Parliament is set to hold a special session on October 31 to select the country’s President. The Parliamentary Business Committee has confirmed that the meeting will take place at 11 a.m. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is anticipated to nominate the current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
Earlier this month, Parliament was expected to nominate and approve a new President, but that process did not occur. Prime Minister Rabuka stated that issues arose concerning his initial nominee, leading him to withdraw that nomination. President Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, and according to the 2013 Constitution, he is eligible to serve two terms. He was appointed for the role in 2021.
