Fiji’s Presidential Appointment: What to Expect on October 31

The Fijian Parliament is scheduled to hold a special session on October 31 to elect the nation’s President. The Business Committee of Parliament has confirmed that this session will commence at 11 a.m.

Current President, the Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, is anticipated to be nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Earlier this month, the Parliament was supposed to nominate and confirm the President’s appointment, but that did not occur due to complications regarding Rabuka’s nominee, leading him to withdraw the candidate.

Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term as President, having been appointed in 2021, and according to the 2013 Constitution, he is eligible for two terms in office.
