The Fijian Parliament will convene for a special session on October 31 to appoint the country’s President. The Business Committee announced that the meeting will take place at 11 am. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is expected to nominate the current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
Earlier this month, Parliament was set to endorse the President’s appointment, but that did not occur. Prime Minister Rabuka noted that there were concerns regarding his nominee, leading to his withdrawal.
President Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, and under the 2013 Constitution, a President can serve a maximum of two terms. He was first appointed in 2021.
