Fiji’s Presidential Appointment Sparks Anticipation

The Fijian Parliament is scheduled to hold a special session on October 31 to appoint the country’s President. The Parliament’s Business Committee confirmed that the session will take place at 11 AM.

Current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, is anticipated to be nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Earlier this month, the Parliament was meant to nominate and confirm the President’s appointment, but this did not occur.

Prime Minister Rabuka indicated that there were some concerns regarding his nominee, which led to him withdrawing that nomination. Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, and according to the 2013 Constitution, a President may serve a maximum of two terms. He was initially appointed to the position in 2021.
