Fiji’s Presidential Appointment Set for October Surprise

The Fijian Parliament will hold a special session on October 31 to elect the country’s President. The Business Committee of Parliament confirmed that the meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. The current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, is anticipated to be nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Earlier this month, Parliament was set to nominate and confirm the appointment of the President, but this did not occur. Prime Minister Rabuka stated that concerns arose regarding his initial nominee, leading to his withdrawal. President Ratu Wiliame is currently in his first term, and according to the 2013 Constitution, a President may serve for two terms. He was first appointed in 2021.
