The Fijian Parliament is set to hold a special session on October 31 to elect the nation’s President. The Parliament’s Business Committee has confirmed that this session will take place at 11 a.m. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is expected to nominate the current President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. Earlier this month, Parliament was scheduled to officially nominate and endorse the President’s appointment, but that did not occur. Prime Minister Rabuka mentioned that concerns arose regarding his nominee, prompting him to withdraw the candidacy. President Ratu Wiliame, who has been in office since his appointment in 2021, is currently serving his first term and is eligible for a second term under the 2013 Constitution, which allows Presidents to serve for two terms.
