Fiji’s President Withdrawal: A Farewell to Leadership

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially withdrawn his name from consideration for a second term as President.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that on October 17, 2024, he reached out to Ratu Wiliame seeking his consent for re-nomination in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution. However, he received a formal notification from Ratu Wiliame on Monday, October 21, 2024, indicating his decision to step back from being nominated for another term.

Rabuka paid tribute to Ratu Wiliame, acknowledging the President’s service to the nation. He praised Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and forbearance in fulfilling his duties as Head of State, noting that his leadership facilitated a smooth governmental transition following the general election in December 2022.

The Prime Minister noted Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to upholding the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, highlighting that he ensured respect for the law despite external pressures. His tenure was characterized by unprecedented freedoms for the Fijian people, symbolizing national unity and integrity both domestically and internationally.

During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame opened State House to all Fijians and engaged in significant diplomatic missions with grace and dignity.

Rabuka announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will take place to express the nation’s gratitude to Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, following traditional protocols, at the conclusion of his term. The appointment of Fiji’s next President will occur during a Special Sitting of Parliament on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
