Fiji’s newly inaugurated President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, made a passionate plea to the chiefs of Fiji, urging them to take on greater responsibility and lead by example. During his inaugural address to the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) at the State House, Ratu Naiqama emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency and active leadership within their communities.
The President’s call to action comes just before a two-day GCC meeting scheduled at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He stressed that for chiefs to retain strength and influence, they must first ensure their own independence and ability to sustain themselves. Ratu Naiqama stated, “You need to be able to feed and fend for yourselves. Only then will your people be able to look up to you as a leader.”
His remarks focused on the need for chiefs to lead fundraising efforts actively, asserting that they should be the first to contribute both resources and effort. He specifically cautioned against a “free-rider” mentality, insisting that leadership entails taking initiative and doing the hard work rather than relying on others. “You can’t be free-riding around. It’s no longer time for free rides. You need to sweat for your own food and drink,” stated Ratu Naiqama.
In addition to emphasizing responsibility, Ratu Naiqama highlighted the critical role of education for effective leadership. He asserted that chiefs should embody the principles they advocate, stating, “Whatever comes from your mouth also needs to be what you practice.”
This call for leadership and accountability comes at a crucial time for Fiji as it embarks on a new chapter under Ratu Naiqama’s presidency. His vision encourages active engagement and responsibility among leaders, fostering a culture of self-reliance that could benefit communities across Fiji.
Overall, Ratu Naiqama’s commitment to encouraging proactive leadership among the chiefs sets a positive tone for Fiji’s future, promising a collaborative effort in uplifting communities through the power of example and engaged leadership.
