Fiji’s newly inaugurated President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has urged the nation’s chiefs to embrace greater responsibility and lead their communities through self-reliance and active involvement. During his first address at the State House, he met with a delegation from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), emphasizing that true leadership is demonstrated through action.
Ratu Naiqama stated that for chiefs to be considered strong and effective leaders, they must be self-sufficient and capable of providing for themselves. He stressed that leadership requires initiative, urging chiefs to be the first to contribute in community fundraising activities and to set a positive example for their people.
Additionally, he criticized the “free-rider” mentality that can sometimes be seen among leaders, stating that reliance on others to shoulder responsibilities is no longer acceptable. His message was clear: chiefs need to actively engage in their communities and not shy away from hard work.
The new President also highlighted the significance of education, pointing out that being well-educated is critical for effective leadership. Ratu Naiqama stated that a chief’s words should reflect their actions, reinforcing the need for integrity and accountability in leadership roles.
As a positive takeaway, Ratu Naiqama’s call for proactive leadership may inspire a renewed sense of community engagement and collaboration among Fiji’s chiefs, fostering a culture of active participation and responsibility that could lead to positive changes in local societies.
