Fiji’s President Steps Down: What’s Next for the Nation?

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, also known as Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially retracted his name from consideration for a second term as President of Fiji.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed on October 17, 2024, that he had reached out to Ratu Wiliame, requesting his consent for re-nomination under section 84(2) of the Constitution. However, on October 21, 2024, Rabuka received Ratu Wiliame’s formal decision to withdraw from the nomination process.

In tribute to Ratu Wiliame, Rabuka stated, “I want to pay tribute to His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and acknowledge his service to the nation as our President.” He noted that Ratu Wiliame performed his duties with integrity and forbearance, facilitating a smooth governmental transition after the December 2022 general election.

Rabuka highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s diligence in maintaining respect for Fiji’s Constitution, even in the face of pressures to stray from upholding the law. His presidency, Rabuka said, was characterized by unprecedented freedoms for Fijians, symbolizing the unity and integrity of the State both domestically and internationally.

During his term, Ratu Wiliame opened State House to all Fijians and engaged in significant diplomatic missions with grace.

A formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will be held to honor His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the conclusion of his term, following traditional protocols. Fiji’s next President is set to be appointed during a Special Sitting of Parliament on October 31, 2024.
