Fiji’s President Steps Down: What’s Next for the Nation?

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere has officially withdrawn his name from consideration for a second term as President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed this decision, noting that on October 17, 2024, he had written to Ratu Wiliame seeking his consent for re-nomination under section 84(2) of the Constitution. The Prime Minister received the formal notification of Ratu Wiliame’s withdrawal on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame for his service to the nation, stating, “I want to pay tribute to His Excellency the President Na Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.” He highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and leadership during his presidency, which facilitated a smooth transition of government following the December 2022 general election.

Rabuka acknowledged Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to upholding the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, even in the face of challenges. He noted that Ratu Wiliame’s term was characterized by significant freedom for the Fijian people and that he represented the nation’s unity and integrity both domestically and internationally.

During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame opened State House to all Fijians and engaged in essential diplomatic missions with grace. Rabuka announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony will take place to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional protocol at the conclusion of his term.

Fiji’s next President will be appointed during a Special Sitting of Parliament scheduled for Thursday, October 31, 2024.
