Fiji’s President Steps Down: A Legacy of Integrity and Unity

His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, also known as Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, has officially withdrawn from consideration for a second term as President of Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed this decision, stating that he had requested Ratu Wiliame’s consent for re-nomination on October 17, 2024, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution.

However, on October 21, 2024, Rabuka received a formal notification from Ratu Wiliame indicating his decision to step back from being nominated for another term. The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for Ratu Wiliame’s contributions to the nation, acknowledging him as an exemplary Head of State.

Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and composure during his presidency, particularly highlighting his role in ensuring a smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 general elections. He noted the President’s commitment to upholding Fiji’s Constitution despite challenges and emphasized that Ratu Wiliame’s tenure was characterized by significant freedoms for the people of Fiji.

Ratu Wiliame is remembered for his efforts to engage with citizens by opening State House to Fijians and managing vital diplomatic missions with dignity. In recognition of his service, Rabuka announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa ceremony would be held to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional customs at the conclusion of his presidency.

The appointment of Fiji’s next President is set to take place during a Special Sitting of Parliament scheduled for Thursday, October 31, 2024.
