Fiji’s newly inaugurated President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, urged the country’s chiefs to take greater responsibility in their roles. Addressing a delegation from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) at the State House, he highlighted the need for leaders to exemplify self-reliance and proactive engagement within their communities, stressing that it is crucial for chiefs to lead by example rather than relying on others.
Ratu Naiqama stated, “For a chief to be strong and mighty, they need to be self-dependent,” emphasizing that true leadership requires one to be capable of supporting themselves and their communities. He advocated for active participation in community initiatives, stating that chiefs should be the first to contribute to fundraising efforts.
In his speech, he criticized what he termed a “free-rider” mentality, insisting that those in leadership should not depend on others to shoulder their responsibilities. “It’s no longer time for free rides. You need to sweat for your own food and drink,” he remarked, underlining that real leadership involves hard work and dedication.
Further, the President pointed out the importance of education for chiefs, emphasizing that effective leaders must be well-educated to inspire their people effectively. He concluded by calling on chiefs to embody the principles they advocate, aligning their actions with their words.
This imperative call for responsible leadership comes just before the GCC’s two-day meeting in Suva, where discussions on communal integrity and leadership responsibilities will likely be pivotal.
This emphasis on active participation and accountability among local leaders reflects a positive and hopeful direction for Fiji, as it encourages unity and empowerment within communities. The call for self-reliance can foster a sense of pride and motivate both leaders and their people to work collaboratively towards a stronger future.
