Fiji’s President Calls for Unity in Education at Major Conference

President Ratu Williame Katonivere of Fiji highlighted the importance of increased cooperation and unity in education during his speech at the 90th Annual Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) conference at the Suva Civic Center.

Addressing the theme “Butu Mawe Solesolevaki kei na Cavuisausau” (following footsteps, collaborating and attaining excellence), President Katonivere stressed the necessity of maintaining core principles, fostering change, and promoting collaboration among educators.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of both past and present educators in enhancing Fiji’s educational landscape and inspiring students to reach for greater heights.

In today’s environment, where youth face various challenges such as social issues, peer pressure, substance abuse, and cyberbullying, President Katonivere urged parents and teachers to share their experiences with effective discipline strategies.

He noted that the education system is constantly evolving and adapting through reforms and programs that serve as its foundation. The teaching profession is anticipated to further develop under the Coalition Government’s National Development Plan. He encouraged educators to actively participate in the progress of the nation while adhering to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal Four concerning Education.

The President also commended those educators who are also mothers and guardians, creating nurturing and structured environments for their children.

Reflecting on his upbringing in a disciplined household, he shared how it taught him respect, responsibility, and ethical decision-making, shaping his leadership approach.

In conclusion, President Katonivere underscored the vital role of education as a catalyst for transformative change that supports the sustainability and growth of Fiji, its communities, and families. He emphasized that the quality of both formal and informal education is essential, especially in nurturing empathy among children and youth.
