Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has emphasized that the ‘Summit of the Future’ provides a significant opportunity for both Fiji and the global community to enhance their commitment to safeguarding humanity’s future. During the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the Summit of the Future Plenary Meeting, he stated that the pact established during the summit reflects a collective vow to improve together while ensuring that no one is left behind.
Under the theme “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” President Katonivere pointed out the perilous state of the world. He highlighted ongoing conflicts, an escalating climate crisis, and failing ecosystems, alongside persistent inequalities and injustices that are increasingly prevalent.
“It is the most vulnerable who are bearing the brunt of these issues. Ultimately, our inaction will impact our children, their children, and future generations,” he remarked. He reiterated the need for a unified vision for a sustainable future and stressed the urgency of action, noting that there are only six years left to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda before 2030.
The President called on global leaders to collaborate as member states within a multilateral framework that includes non-state actors, the private sector, and all segments of society. Ratu Wiliame insisted on the importance of choosing peace over conflict, honoring all human rights as outlined in the UN Charter, and committing to the protection of the environment and its resources, both on land and at sea.
