Fiji’s President Calls for Global Unity at Summit of the Future

Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has emphasized that the ‘Summit of the Future’ presents a significant opportunity for Fiji and the global community to enhance their commitment to securing the future of humanity.

During his address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ratu Wiliame noted that the pact established at the summit embodies a united dedication to improving collective efforts while ensuring no one is left behind.

The summit’s theme, “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” was highlighted by President Katonivere, who remarked on the perilous state of the world. He pointed out ongoing conflicts, the worsening climate crisis, and development issues leading to failing ecosystems, as well as pervasive inequalities and injustices.

“The most vulnerable populations are bearing the brunt of these issues. If we remain inactive, it will be our children and future generations who will pay the price,” he warned. He underscored the necessity of a shared vision for a sustainable future, noting that the achievement of this vision is dependent on the actions taken in the next six years to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda.

President Katonivere called upon leaders to collaborate as member states within a robust multilateral framework that involves non-state actors, the private sector, and all segments of society.

“We must prioritize peace over conflict and uphold all human rights as stated in the UN Charter. It is crucial that we safeguard our environment and its resources across land, sea, and air,” he concluded.
