Opposition MP Ketan Lal has stated that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who feel deeply saddened and disappointed by the Mercy Commission’s recent decision to pardon George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
In his remarks, Lal noted that this decision has reopened wounds for many individuals who endured significant losses during that period, whether it involved family, livelihoods, or having to flee the country for safety in those troubling times.
He emphasized that the pain from the events of 2000 remains vivid for many, and he stands in solidarity with those affected, acknowledging the lasting impact it has had on their lives and the nation at large.
“As your representative, I want to be truthful—while I hear and understand your concerns, this is the situation we currently face, and I lack the authority to overturn or question the decision made. Please know that I genuinely empathize with your suffering, and while I cannot alter the past, I will diligently represent your voices in our ongoing fight for the coalition to be transparent and accountable to all Fijians,” Lal stated.
