Former Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has accused certain ministers who are currently under investigation by FICAC of attempting to influence the appointment of a new Commissioner for FICAC. These ministers are reportedly facing inquiries for allegedly filing false declarations with the Registrar of Political Parties and for engaging in corrupt practices.
Chaudhry asserted that the ministers, fearing prosecution, are trying to remove the cases from Acting Assistant Commissioner Francis Puleiwai by ensuring that a candidate of their preference is appointed as the permanent Commissioner.
He also noted previous allegations of interference by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Barbara Malimali, regarding the Registrar’s decision to refer the ministers to FICAC for investigation.
“A report concerning Malimali’s actions has been submitted to FICAC and acknowledged; we understand that it is currently under investigation,” Chaudhry stated.
He expressed concerns that FICAC, under the leadership of Puleiwai, is experiencing significant pressure in its investigations against the ministers. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Fiji Labour Party has been informed that Malimali may be seeking the position of FICAC Commissioner, raising questions about her suitability for consideration in that role.
