The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to review the appeal from Independent parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties. The party was officially deregistered on July 1, 2024.

ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali emphasized the need for patience from the public as the commission deliberates on the appeal’s outcome.

“We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated. “We anticipate publishing our decision once the proceedings conclude. Until then, we cannot provide further comments, and we trust that the public of Fiji will understand the importance of discretion and exercise patience during this time.”

The ECF is processing the appeal in its quasi-judicial capacity.
